“You have made us for Yourself, and our hearts are restless, until they rest in You.” -St. Augustine
With its many holidays, picnics, and parties, summertime presents us with a strange juxtaposition of boredom and busyness. Whether you are still in school or not, we feel there is free reign to enjoy the delights of life. Summer tempts us to take it easy, kick back, and to perhaps set aside some of our more structured goals and endeavors.
However, we find that the endless grasping for sticky ice cream, long days at the beach, cold cups of iced tea, and escaping from our responsibilities eventually leaves us burnt out. It is this feeling of restlessness that we are exploring in this issue, a restlessness beautifully captured in that famous quote by Saint Augustine. “Our hearts are restless, until they can find rest in you.”
Some of us have wandered far from the path God has designed for us and some of us have just finally discovered his plan after years of searching. Perhaps we’ve restlessly sought to fill our lives with the pleasures of life or with our work or even with things that seem good but distract us from our ultimate goal.
This summer, we are drawing inspiration from St. Augustine, whose search for meaning took him from Carthage to Rome to Milan. May his search for meeting inspire us and provide a source of guidance to our summer relaxation. Though summer is a season of leisure and adventure, may it never distract us from the place of true rest, where our hearts find eternal happiness in Him.
